From Transaction to Trust: How Wellness Retail Is Reshaping the Store Experience

Studio X founder Rufus Turnbull talks to Inside Retail Asia about why wellness retailers need to move from transaction to trust, and how that thinking shaped the Mannings flagship at Hong Kong's IFC.

Studio X founder and creative director Rufus Turnbull spoke to Inside Retail Asia about how wellness retail is shifting from a transactional model to one built on trust, expertise and reassurance, using the Mannings flagship at Hong Kong's IFC as the throughline. Some of the strongest points from that conversation:

Give customers a reason beyond the transaction

"Stores increasingly need to give customers a reason to visit beyond simply completing a transaction," Turnbull explains. "As products become more commoditised and e-commerce continues to compete on convenience and price, physical retail needs to create value through expertise, reassurance, discovery and experience."

Technology should earn its place

"I was always conscious about being purpose-driven. What's the reason to put in a touchscreen, other than it is the latest bit of gadgetry?" Turnbull says, recalling the same instinct that got applied to the Mannings flagship. "A lot of the technology that we introduced had to meet certain criteria: we did not want anything that you would have to explain to a customer; it should be completely intuitive, and it should add value to the transaction. It should earn its place in a store."

Purpose before palette

"Our belief is that colour palettes and feelings-as-design-language are a subset of the overall customer brand positioning and commercial purpose of a space. You've got to define your purpose succinctly first," Turnbull says. "If you don't have a purpose, you are unable to develop insights and, therefore, meaningful concepts that will actually result in something appealing and of value to consumers."
